Southwater A won the Year 3+4 Primary Schools Girls Football competition at Kingslea School today coming out the right side of a monumental toe-to-toe tussle with Leechpool A by virtue of superior goal difference. Small margins as they say.
The competition was played on a simple round-robin basis by the seven teams (from five schools) involved. Leechpool A made a strong start by beating Heron Way and beating their own B team big whilst Southwater A opened their account in round 2 with an in-house win of their own against Southwater B; so much for going easy on your mates!
Round 3 brought the big one between the two leading protagonists and a tight game was shared one each. From that point on the big two won all their games. Southwater A relied one a couple of one-nillers whilst Leechpool A were comfortable winners in their remaining matches. By the end of Round 6 the goal difference of the two was identical, 15 goals for and one against.
So all came down to the last round. Southwater A faced perennial big rival Heron Way and Leechpool A took on Kingslea. Southwater A turned on the style to beat the Herons 4-0 whilst Leechpool A played the match of the day versus the hosts coming out on top 3-2. So both won but, for want of a better phrase, Southwater won better and took the top spot.
Well done to Kingslea for coming third. They were in the title hunt until a second half Southwater A goal burst their bubble. Heron Way edged out Shelley closely for fourth and somewhat ironically the Southwater and Leechpool B teams finished level like their A team colleagues, also required goal difference to be separated and also finished in Southwater favour.
