Sport, Art and Play Camps Information

Horsham Sports Services runs sport, art and play camp days in most school holiday weeks catering for 5-12 year olds. Our main base for this provision is The Bridge leisure centre, Broadbridge Heath where we take advantage of an excellent range of facilities.

Our leading priorities are for children to have fun but to be safe as they do so. Our style is more akin to that of a junior youth club where children have lots of freedom to choose and move between activities, rather than having to fit in with a prescriptive timetable of activities. That said on any given day there will be an underlying schedule of formal and informal group workshops for children to participate in if they wish.

Full days run from 8.30am to 5.30pm to give convenience for working parents, although parents may choose to drop-off/pick-up later/earlier than these times if they wish. Half day booking is also possible, mornings being 8.30am-1pm and afternoons 1-5.30pm. We also run sport-specific workshops that children can either be booked into specifically or attend without extra charge as part of their main camp booking. Workshops will typically consist of a warm-up, skills/drills and matchplay, possibly including a tournament. Equipment and coaching is age appropriate.

Camp activities are overseen by appropriately qualified, trained, DBS checked and insured staff working within a comprehensive framework of policies and procedures.

On some holiday weeks we offer free places to children from eligible families through the ‘Holiday Activities and Food’ (HAF) programme. We promote ths service when it becomes available for any given holiday.

Let us provide you with more detail about our activities…

Sports

Mainstream sports we are able to provide include athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, tri-golf, hockey, netball, rounders, tag rugby and table tennis

More niche sports we are able to provide include archery, boccia, croquet, disc golf, dodgeball, fencing, footgolf, goalball, handball, kinball, lacrosse, new age kurling, quoits, skittles, sitting volleyball, stoolball, ultimate frisbee and tchoukball

Art

Horsham Sports Services staff are not art specialists but as a team is still keen and able to provide children with opportunities to be creative in its holiday camps in the following ways:

  • Crafts – materials and encouragement are provided for children in papercraft, drawing, colouring and making things like pom poms
  • Musical instruments – a selection of basic musical instruments is available for children to have fun and experiment with in making music
  • Dance – a music player will be available and sometimes a dance deliverer may be available to give a dance focus.
  • Lego – giving children the chance to be creative in an engineering kind of way

.

Play

Within the context of a 9 hour day it’s important that children have lots of opportunity to play freely under their own steam (as opposed to receiving structured tuition) in order that they can be more relaxed, creative, social and, ultimately, be themselves as children and have lots of fun.

We have a range of equipment pieces of a more play-based nature (some individualised, some cooperation-based) – for example wheelchairs, go-karts, boxing bag/gloves, limbo, pogo-stick, pool, table football, boxing punchbag, spacehoppers, stacking cups, tunnels, catching frame, board games, children’s books, caterpillar tracks, jenga, giant Connect 4, swingball, tug of war, nerf guns, Scalextrics, Quest virtual reality and X-Box (with age appropriate games!).

Additionally staff are trained to deliver a range of playground games (eg capture the flag)
