Southwater B are the year 5 football tournament winners after beating Heron Way A on penalties in a tight final. There were some classy passing football teams gracing the event – Southwater A, Heron Way A and Pulborough – but Southwater B showed that grit and determination can be just as important. Their ability to dig in and grind out results saw them nudge second place in the group stage and then tough out the play-offs stage with two scoreless draws followed by success with the spot kick deciders. There’s more than one way to be successful.
After the heartbreak of their semi-final penalty loss St Mary’s Pulborough regathered their mojo to beat Leechpool A 1-0 for third place. Southwater A, victim of a shock defeat to Pulborough in the group, also rallied to take fifth spot with a confident win over Castlewood. Shelley and Kingslea shared seventh spot as result of their 0-0 play-off result against each other. Northomes confidently emerged from the bottom-end group of three to take ninth followed by Heron Way B and Leechpool B.
