The third and final meeting of the Horsham Primary Schools Girls Football League took place tonight at the Tanbridge astroturf in bitterly cold weather. Heron Way A were heavy favourites starting the night in pole position and never looked like relinquishing that advantage as they added another three wins to their record. The bigger question mark hovered around second spot with Southwater and Leechpool front sides matching each other point for point but the former prevailing by a goal difference of just three.
Interesting observations regarding the top three teams included: (1) Heron Way not conceding a goal over the three meetings and the other two only conceding one each; (2) the top two both remaining unbeaten and both finishing with a goal difference of +38, albeit Southwater scored one more; (3) of the three meetings between the big three the only one not to finish in a draw was Heron Way beating Leechpool A 1-0 in the first meeting, perhaps the most important result to be achieved in the 78 match full programme.
Three teams were neck and neck for fourth position, Heron B just shading it over Shelley by a point and Kingslea A just behind the Shells marginally by goal difference. On 35 points St Mary’s Pulborough finished in the mid-table slot, five points ahead of a Cowfold team that enjoyed a late surge of good results on their third outing.
Below Cowfold a clutch of teams in a close bunch. Leechpool B were at the top of it with 30 points despite losses in all of their last three games. Southwater B finished tenth, above Castlewood on goal difference.
Despite their lowly position Leechpool C played well in their last night of the competition enjoying four close games of which one was their first win over the Kingslea B team below them. The Kings’ second team however can take comfort from pushing fourth placed Heron Way B all the way in a 1-0 defeat.
