The year 5+6 girls took to the football cup stage tonight at Tanbridge and they provided some scintillating action to warm-up the large watching band of spectating parents and teachers. Southwater took top honours as their A team won all their matches, including a 1-0 victory against Heron Way A in the final achieved by a wonder strike. Holbrook B won Tier 2 and Heron Way B Tier 3.
In the first phase groups Southwater B and Leechpool A finished level on points and goal difference so footgolf challenge had to be used to split them, Southwater B’s goalkeeper seeing her team through in that. Heron Way A won through Group 2 despite some steadfast defending from an obdurate Shelley team. Southwater A cruised through Group 3 scoring eight goals without reply and Kingslea just edged out Castlewood on goal difference after the two fought out a goalless draw when they met.
In the Tier 1 semi-finals Kingslea couldn’t stem the Southwater A goal tide conceding two whilst Heron Way A squeezed past Southwater B to set up the final which saw Southern glory achieved.
In the Tier 2 semis Leechpool A put paid to Shelley hopes with a footgolf decided victory but on meeting Holbrook B in the final their footgolf luck deserted them as the Holbies got about 30 centimetres closer with their kick, a small distance with kicks of around 25 metres.
Final mention for Tier 3 where Heron Way B nudged out St Mary’s Pulborough 1-0 in the final.
Girls football is clearly in a very healthy state in the Horsham area!
