Kingslea won the Horsham Primary Schools Year 6 Open Football Cup last night on the Tanbridge astroturf, squeezing out Heron Way A by virtue of the footgolf challenge used to decide drawn matches in the events. 14 teams entered the competition which involved a first phase of four groups feeding into a second phase of another four.
In Group 1 St Mary’s Horsham caused an early upset by knocking out Leechpool A, a result that paved the way for Southwater B to come through as winners. Heron Way A breezed past Northolmes in Group 2 to earn a decider against a gritty St Mary’s Pulborough team which had beat Castlewood courtesy of a footgolf challenge winner. Heron Way A dominated and went a goal up in the first half but St Mary’s stuck in there and earned an equaliser in the form of an own goal. However more Heron pressure brought their second goal which proved enough to see them through to the top tier in the second phase.
Groups 3 and 4 were played as round-robins given there were three teams in each. Holbrook scored four goals in beating Leechpool B whilst Southwater A could only win 2-0, so when Holbrook and Southwater A met and fought out a draw it was the former heading to the top tier. The Group 4 story was a similar one only with fewer goals involved. Arunside and Kingslea were the teams neck and neck here but Kingslea’s one extra goal in despatching Heron Way B proved all important.
All four Phase 2 groups were played out as mini-competitions in their own right. Northolmes were delighted to win both their matches to take Tier 4. Leechpool A finally got up to speed with convincing victories to top Tier 3. Southwater A found Tier 2 fairly straightforward too whilst their B team for once was left to carry the school flag in the top echelon.
Southwater B gave everything in their semi versus Heron Way A but narrowly succumbed 1-0 whilst Kingslea ended Holbrook hopes by a similar scoreline in the other one. Holbrook won the third place honours with a brace against Southwater B but there were no goals in the final, hence resorting to the footgolf decider which went Kingslea’s way.
Next Friday the year 5+6 girls convene for their cup.
