Heron Way Win Year 6 Indoor Athletics Opener

Heron Way stormed their way to victory in the Year 6 Horsham Primary Schools Sports Hall Athletics Competition last Thursday at Forest School in Horsham. They accumulated a hefty 406 points total, 78 in front of second placed Southwater and a further 30 past Greenway in third. Fine margins sometimes make all the difference in sporting events but they weren’t evident in this one.

Nine schools in total made up the field and over 200 children contributed to a noisy but exciting atmosphere for a competition where the boys undertook events separately from the girls. The girls started on the track events, of which there was a programme seven races to go through, and the boys on the field events, of which there were five to undertake, before everyone switched after the lunch break. The javelin was all done at the end.

The Forest sports leaders did a splendid job of officiating the event under the watch of new event manager, Ian Ford, with Mike Hart from Horsham District Sports Development providing close support. That support was particularly vital when it became clear that the computer was saying ‘no’ in processing the track results. Mike had to go into manual compilation mode but the drama ended well as the results arrived with about two minutes of the allotted sports hall time left to go.
