Heron Way and St Peter’s Cowfold Win Year 5+6 Football League Honours
The second and final meeting of the Year 5+6 Horsham Primary Schools Football League finally took place tonight on The Bridge’s multicourts, catching up after the initial rain postponement a few weeks ago. Heron Way A won a closely fought Division 1 just ahead of Southwater A and Kingslea A. St Peter’s Cowfold won Division 2 despite a late challenge from Heron Way B keeping them on their toes.
Heron Way A’s route to their success was anything but straight-forward in their second showing. Kingslea A got the better of them in their opener with a late goal but the match ended up being awarded to them as a result of Kingslea innocently making an error in playing one too many players on the pitch in the first half. Southwater A beat them with a single strike despite the Herons laying seige and peppering both posts. Both Leechpool A and Shelley were both negotiated by the odd goal in three to see the Herons over the line despite Southwater A and Kingslea A bearing down on them by winning all their other games in their run ins to finish second and third places respectively.
In Div 1 mid-table territory Shelley continued their roller-coaster ride of wins and losses but finished comfortably ahead of fifth place Arunside, another exponent of topsy-turvy. Steyning A were more consistent in achieving sixth – they consistently struggled in meeting 1 with four losses and then, Lazarus-like, consistently shone in meeting 2 with four straight wins.
Leechpool A and Kingslea B both finished on 22 points but the former took seventh spot with superior goal difference. St Mary’s Pulborough propped up the top tier although their fighting spirit was evident to the last as they took high-riding Kingslea A to the wire in a game that finished 2-1.
No need for difficult decisions in Division 2 as St Peter’s Cowfold continued the dominance that they had exhibited in their first meeting showing. Slinfold showed the greatest resistance going down 2-0 and in common with other opponents on the night failing to register a goal against them.
Heron Way B kept them honest however with a full set of second night wins, albeit the slip they were hoping for never arrived. Slinfold finished third giving another demonstration of small school footballing quality and probably providing the most exciting sequence of games, winning two of them 3-2.
Southwater and Leechpool second strings battled gamely for fourth place but it was Southwater that nudged it via goal difference. Steyning’s B and C teams were similarly neck and neck in the next two slots and again goal difference in B’s favour will give them playground bragging rights on Monday morning.
Castlewood in the eighth berth enjoying a mixed night which included some punishment from St Peter’s but pushing the runners-up, Heron Way B, all the way but just coming up short 2-1. Another tough night for Kingslea C but well done to them for trying hard in all their games.
