Herons Hit the Rounders Heights

Heron Way School won the Horsham Primary Schools Rounders Tournament this morning at Millais School rising to the top of a big field of 18 teams drawn from 11 local schools.

Millais’s field was set-up with six pitches to provide the required capacity for the large entry. Each pitch hosted a first phase group from which a number of the usual big school suspects dominated, namely the A teams from Kingslea, North Heath, Leechpool, Heron Way and Southwater. However little St John’s broke into the club from Group F, courtesy of narrow victories over Holbrook A and Kingslea C.

Winners Pool A was close fought. In the crunch match between Kingslea A and Leechpool A the latter shaved it 7.5 to 5.5. Winners Pool B however was much more clear cut with Heron Way beating both Southwater A and St John’s by big margins.

Heron Way’s strength saw them through in the final versus Leechpool A too but the scoreline of 9-6.5 gave indication of the first time the opponents had brought real pressure to bear. Southwater A took third in another good game, 7-4.5 against Kingslea A.

Thanks go to the Millais year 9 sports leaders who did fantastically to execute the tasks involved in making the event go smoothly – umpiring, chaperoning and results recording. Unfortunately they did not do quite so well in the traditional winners v leaders end match, the Herons demolishing them!
