Year 3 Glee for Heron Way
Twelve year 3 school teams made for an excellent competition to complete the series of primary school football cups that have been taking place on recent Fridays on the Tanbridge astroturf. Heron Way emerged as winners beating Leechpool A 2-0 in the final.
The Herons breezed through their group with wins over St Mary’s Pulborough and Southwater B. The other powerhouse team, Southwater A, didn’t have it quite so easy in their first stage endeavours. They fought out a 2-2 draw with a tigerish Slinfold A team that twice held the lead. So come their last match against Leechpool B they needed to better Slinfold’s 5-1 win, a feat they achieved with a little to spare 6-0.
Group B involved more modest scorelines, so Kingslea’s three goals was enough to secure them two wins to progress to the top table in the second phase. Leechpool A completed the set of group winners with two confident victories.
The big boys – Heron Way and Southwater A – met in the first top tier final and largely cancelled each other out in a game that finished goalless, so a footgolf decider was required to settle matters, which it did in the Herons’ favour. In the other semi an unfortunate Kingslea late own goal decided another tight game, propelling Leechpool A to the final.
Slinfold A were winners of the middle tier of second place teams, coming through a footgolf decider against Pulborough before having an easier time against Castlewood 5-1. In the lower tier of third place teams well done to Northolmes for nudging past Southwater B to take that section and come ninth overall.
Thanks go to the young team of refs – Tom M, Tom S, Araya and Izzy – for another excellent display of officiating. Their confidence and control improves with every game they oversee, helped by the impeccable behaviour of the young players.
