Superior Goal Difference Sees Herons Through to Another Football Triumph

More football honours came the way of Heron Way on Monday afternoon as their A team won the year 5+6 inclusive football competition hosted at their school. But it was close as they finished level on 17 points with two other teams – Southwater A and Heron Way B – and so had to rely on their superior goal difference to see them through.

Eight teams entered the event, one more than organiser Ian Ford had bargained for so the format was quickly revised into an 8-team full round-robin where all played all. The top three teams all drew against each other and beat everyone else, hence the need to resort to the goal for and against columns to split them.

Greenway’s team was the best of the rest and but for a bit more ruthlessness in front of goal to back up their neat passing could have been contenders. As it was they had to settle for being top of the mid-table region, beating Southwater B by three points for that status.

There was an L of a battle in the lower reaches as the two Leechpool teams and Loxwood gave it their all. Leechpool A won that little sub-plot over Loxwood on goal difference whilst Leechpool B fought valiantly but couldn’t quite manage to get a point to reward their efforts.

Well done to all players involved and thanks to Heron Way for hosting the inclusive football events this season.
