A tremendous start to the Horsham Primary Schools Football season tonight at the Tanbridge astroturf with the year 5+6 age children taking the stage.
Teams were divided into two separate competitions – one for large school first teams (of which there are seven) and the other for small school teams and large school B teams (of which there are six).
The large schools event produced a catalogue of topsy-turvy results. Southwater uncharacteristically started slow suffering defeat at the hands of Shelley and then finishing all square with Leechpool A but after resting a couple of rounds returned with a blast beating North Heath heavily and bringing Heron Way A’s feet back to earth 4-0 given that they had won all three of their other games to lead the table.
Leechpool A and Steyning A are also in the leadership mix too on 14 points like Southwater but they too tasted success and failure with a combination of wins of losses. Indeed the round-robin phase is only two-thirds complete and no team is unbeaten yet.
Kingslea and Shelley both lie within striking range of next meeting’s top tier play-offs. Kingslea shed points in three of its matches but was the one team to take down Leechpool A. After Shelley’s fantastic initial win over Southwater they were pegged back with two narrow losses and a draw.
A tough night for North Heath with four straight losses but they should take consolation from displaying good attitude and effort through the evening.
Some super battles in the small schools and B teams event as well. Great night for St Robert Southwell with three straight wins including a single goal triumph over a strong Castlewood team that lies in second place.
It looks like there will be an exciting race for the third play-off top tier place between St Mary’s Horsham, Steyning B and Leechpool B. Heron Way B were competitive but as the only team unable to secure a win in the group they have probably left themselves with too much to do.
Second a final meeting of the year 5+6 league to run on Friday 9th October.
