A super year 6 open football tournament at Tanbridge tonight with Southwater triumphing convincingly over Leechpool A in the final 2-0.
14 teams entered made for a slightly challenging fixture schedule with two groups of four teams and two groups of three in Phase 1.
William Penn was the surprise package of Group A gaining two wins to overhaul big beasts Kingslea. Southwater started slowly in Group B with a scoreless draw against St Robert Southwell but accelerating thereafter with two convincing wins to top the group, two points ahead of the unbeaten St Robs whose failure to beat bottom team Leechpool B was their undoing.
Sudden-death penalties were required to separate Heron Way and Oakfields in the favour of the former after the two drew and finished on the same points, goal difference and goals scored measures. Leechpool A topped Group D although interestingly they also failed to gain maximum points just like every other Tier 1 qualifying team on the night.
In the second phase Leechpool A beat Heron Way 2-0 in the first semi-final and Southwater comprehensively brought William Penn back down to earth with a 7-0 drubbling to set up the final which Southwater deservedly won. Shelley and St Robert Southwell shared the Tier 2 winners podium after finishing 2-0. Two 1-0 wins in the knockout stage saw North Heath take the Tier 3 title and Steyning B and Leechpool B shared the two team fourth tier.
