The Horsham area’s primary school hockey teams convened again tonight on the Tanbridge astroturf to produce some entertaining play in the second and final instalment of the annually contested league. Despite the arctic conditions the children applied themselves fantastically well and plenty of goals were scored.

Leechpool started the night in third place but, vitally, had a game in hand which they cashed in in the first round of games against Greenway 3-0. Third place North Heath A came next with a big challenge but they dealt with it scoring a single goal win. Steyning A were blown away 9-0 and then a battle royale versus Steyning B but they came through 2-1 before another tough challenge, St Robert Southwell, but not tough enough Leechpool scoring another single goal victory. So Leechpool champions with 43 points.

Kingslea A did all they could to keep up the pressure On the Leechpoolers, winning all their four second night games without conceding a goal but the damage had been done in the first meeting where they had drawn two games, including the one against Leechpool, in comparison to Leechpool’s one. Unbeaten throughout the process but stil only second place. Sport can be cruel sometimes.

Another three wins for North Heath A but their loss to Leechpool put paid to their title hopes. St Robert Southwell A started their second outing like a train with two 3-0 wins but things tailed off as they came up against the big boys in their later matches.

North Heath B performed well to claw their way up to fifth spot but less said the better about their last match sign-off where Kingslea A hit them for six. Greenway will be happy with their return to the hockey fray in achieving sixth spot.

Draw specialists Steyning B took seventh but will be happy that they ran the champions very close in their match with them. Kingslea B, another team with draw tendencies, lay another point behind and standing above St Robert Southwell B courtesy of goal difference.

Steyning A finished in bottom spot but the fact that they scored three draws in the nine matches showed how competitive the league was from top to bottom.
