Another super night of football tonight, in spite of the arctic cold and wind but thankfully just in time to avoid the main thrust of heavy rain, at the Tanbridge astroturf to conclude the Horsham Primary Schools Girls Football League. Well done to Southwater for holding off Leechpool A’s valiant challenge to win the Division A title. Congratulations too to Heron Way for overhauling Shelley to take Division B after starting the night behind them.

Teams split into the two divisional sections based on their finishing position in the big round-robin that had run over the first two meetings; so it was likely that more close games would ensue and that prediction was borne out as the games were played.

Start of night leaders Southwater and Leechpool A negotiated tricky first round ties against Plaistow and Kirdford and Kingslea 1-0 and 2-1 respectively. Southwater followed up with a single goal triumph over Kingslea before the big two met in the third round of games. Just like in the previous meeting when the two fought out a stalemate neither could breach the defence of the other and the match ended goalless. 

Leechpool completed two more wins thereafter and Southwater beat St Robert Southwell so by the finish the Southies had preserved the two point advantage they enjoyed at the start of the night. Kingslea’s 1-0 win over Plaistow and Kirdford ensured their third place in the top tier.

In Division B top two Shelley and Heron Way both took a liking to Leechpool B with big wins and Shelley dropped points in a draw with a resurgent Castlewood outfit that improved its position to third spot at the expense of Leechpool. Top position was effectively decided in the Herons’ favour by a single strike when they went head-to-head with Shelley.
