St Robert Southwell and Loxwood schools took the two age group titles on offer on Friday in the Horsham Area Small Schools Quadkids District Sports events run at The Bridge leisure centre’s athletics track.

In the morning the school year 3+4 children (7-9 year olds) took the stage, around 150 of them from 8 schools. The weather was very warm although a bit of cloud cover helped to take the edge off it. The children produced some super performances. The four quadkids disciplines – a 400m run, standing long jump, 50m sprint and mini-howler throw – were officiated by a band of excellent volunteer officials provided by the schools, and all went smoothly; even the computer spreadsheet behaved itself!

The results which finally emerged saw St Robert Southwell finish top the standings with a total of 2568 points. Interestingly they were only third in the separated year 3 points listing and second in the year 4s, so pointing to the value of an allround strong contribution from their team. All Saints, incredibly in the context of 16,827 points being scored overall in the event, lay just three points behind, their year 3s being central to their performance as the top scorers in that year group. Well done to St John’s achieving third place, their year 4s being top contributors in that sub-section.

The year 5+6 event ran in the afternoon and also went well from an activity perspective with the volunteers again being superb.

All round power from both its year 5s and 6s saw Loxwood to a big total of 3002, just 25 off its winning total from last year. St John’s year 5’s achieved the highest contribution (1455) from that year group to be the mainstay of their runners-up total of 2986, again showing a wafer-thin winning margin of 16 points separating from top spot. Well done to All Saints another 83 points behind in third spot.
