The final football instalment of the local primary schools sport calendar ran today with a large entry of year 3+4 girls teams coming together at Kingslea School for an excellent bash. Southwater started well, finished strong and weren’t half bad in the middle too to come through as convincing winners, beating hosts Kingslea 4-1 in the final.

The ten attending teams were split into two first phase groups of five. St Robert Southwell emerged as the surprise package in Group A winning all four of their games, including sweeping aside nearest challengers Leechpool 3-0. However both qualified for the Upper Tier in the second phase. Heron way took third and Castlewood beat Pulborough 2-0 to condemn them to bottom spot.

Southwater were given a good test in their first outing of Group B by Kingslea but having passed it they proceeded to run riot with a number of big wins. Kingslea joined them in the Upper Tier with wins in their other games. St Mary’s took third and Shelley’s bonus loss point versus Kingslea kept them above Northolmes at the bottom end of the table.

In the Upper Tier semis Southwater dismantled Leechpool 5-0 but St Robert Southwell and Kingslea was a scoreless stalemate, requiring the latter to progress by virtue of a sudden death penalty shoot-out. So Southwater and Kingslea locked horns again. Unfortunately for Kingslea they made an awful goal conceding two goals in the first minute to put themselves at the foot of a tall mountain from the off. They re-gathered their mojo to be competitive but still conceded another two goals before snatching a late consolation goal.

Heron Way was top team in the Middle Tier, fifth overall, beating St Mary’s 1-0 in the final of that section. In the Lower Tier play-off, ninth position overall, Northolmes beat St Mary’s Pulborough 2-0.

Well done to all girls and teams involved for some excellent endeavours.
