It was the turn of the year 3+4s this week to turn on the football league style at the Tanbridge astroturf and they did not disappoint providing some fantastic matches. Just like in the year 5+6s the week before Leechpool A and Southwater lead the standings winning all their matches, the former finishing marginally ahead by virtue of goal difference. Sparks will fly when they play each other in two weeks’ time.
Shelley and Kingslea A are still in touch with the leaders both winning three and losing two but Shelley picked up bonus points by virtue of close losses to Heron Way A and Leechpool A. Castlewood would also have finished three and two but for lowly Heron Way B holding them to a scoreless result, the only draw of the night.
A raft of teams – Plaistow and Kirdford, Leechpool B, St Mary’s Horsham and Heron Way A – lie on 13 points, all as a result of winning two and losing three. They are unlikely to be title contenders but all are dangerous customers and may prove to be banana skins that the big boys slip up on.
In the lower reaches Heron Way B finished in tenth thanks to holding Castlewood to a draw that upped their points total to seven. Special word for one of Heron Way B’s defenders, a female who was probably the smallest player on show on the night – she showed excellent fortitude in regularly tackling opponents many times her bodyweight. Kingslea B sit bottom after six losses but they gave their all and it was great to see them get a goal against Heron Way A.
In addition to the excellent entertainment and skills of the players it was great to see a number of new young referees blooded to the process tonight and doing really well in their endeavour.
