Leechpool A lead the Horsham Primary Schools Year 5+6 Football League at the end of the first meeting of two which took place on the Tanbridge astroturf tonight. They played one more match than most of the other teams but were still the only team to go through the night unbeaten, albeit Arunside forced a goalless draw with them and small school St Mary’s Horsham gave them a fright in the match of the day which they won 3-2.

Chief chasers are Southwater, always thereabouts and still to take on the leaders next time out, and dark horses St Mary’s Pulborough who ended up with a scoreline of 1-0 in all six of their matches five of them to their favour including a shock win over Southwater and one against to Leechpool A. The last team to win so many 1-0s in a season was Arsenal.

Below the top three another pack of four teams – Shelley, Heron Way A, St Mary’s Horsham and Kingslea A – were spread between 20-22 points. Whilst it’s unlikely any of these will be able to mount a title push in the second meeting they are all dangerous customers who could inflict serious damage to the ambitions of the top three contenders.

In the lower middle region of the table Plaistow/Kirdford and Arunside were both competitive and inconsistent at all times, Plaistow/Kirdford’s best result being to hold Heron Way A to a draw and Arunside being the only team to put a dent in Leechpool A’s bonnet.

Castlewood had a tough night overall but enjoyed a 4-1 super victory over Leechpool B as their one success of the evening. Heron Way B also had limited success in terms of results but a creditable win over Plaistow/Kirdford and a number of narrow 1-0 defeats to some big boys including Leechpool A showed they were not to be taken lightly.

Leechpool B and Kingslea B brought up the rear with eight points each but the former held Heron Way A to a scoreless draw and the latter did likewise with Shelley and both can be proud of the way they fought through all their games.

All told a great evening of football fun. The second and final meeting will be held in two weeks’ time.
