St John’s, Horsham and Loxwood schools took the two age group titles on offer yesterday in the Horsham Area Small Schools Quadkids District Sports events run at The Bridge leisure centre’s athletics track.

In the morning the school year 3+4 children (7-9 year olds) took the stage, nearly 200 of them from 10 schools. The weather was good – dry and warm but not too hot – and the children responded with some super performances. The four quadkids disciplines – a 400m run, standing long jump, 50m sprint and mini-howler throw – were officiated by a band of excellent volunteer officials provided by the schools, and all went smoothly bar problems with the results input which necessitated a delay in declaring the results.

The results which finally emerged saw St John’s top the standings with a total of 2494 points which was most strongly underpinned by some exceptional scores by their year 4s. All Saints lay just 41 points behind, their year 3s being central to their performance, just being one point off fifth placed Castlewood for being the top scoring year 3 team. Warnham pipped Loxwood by just 13 points for the honour of third place.

The year 5+6 event ran in the afternoon and also went well from an activity perspective with the volunteers again being superb but required a delayed results declaration.

All round power from both its year 5s and 6s saw Loxwood to a big total of 3027. Despite a bumper year 6 crop of 1583 points All Saints again finished as bridesmaids 57 points adrift of the winner’s total. Northolmes just won out over St John’s for third spot by nine points
