The second week of the Horsham primary schools tennis league proved to be a good one with Southwater consolidating its leading position in both age groups but Holbrook’s year 5+6s upping their challenge and the other teams all continuing to enjoy positive moments.
It was doubles week in the year 3+4s and only the Daniel and Rosie combination for St Mary’s being able to put a dent in Southwater’s dominance and prevent a full sweep with their 14-11 win over Hugo and Alfie. Harry and Esha went unbeaten for Southwater in all the pairs combinations they featured in.
The year 5+6s spread out over four courts to play a second week of singles matches. Southwater and Holbrook met first up. Southwater won convincingly but there were two drawn matches as a consequence of time being up in their rounds of play. Southwater’s J Force, Jensen and Jasper, were the spearheads for their team winning maximum points from their contributions. St Mary’s Horsham were similarly dominant in their first match against Shelley, albeit Shelley’s girls, Clemence and Megan, both managed to put a win on the board in the face of St Mary’s application of pressure.
Next up Southwater gave Shelley a hard time, just falling short of winning the maximum 40 points at the last as Shelley’s Lewis held Fred to a 7-7 draw in the available time. Holbrook versus St Mary’s was a key match for informing second place overall and it was the former that got the advantage 31-22 with Raghav being their star man with two victories.
In Round 3 Holbrook’s Tristan V turned on the style to inspire his team to victory over Shelley. St Mary’s limited Southwater’s winning margin more than any other opponent with Anders and Nicholas both managing to beat Harry. No stopping Jensen, Jasper and Fred though powering their way through to maximum hauls.
The league comes to its conclusion next Friday with its third instalment.
