Another super meeting of the Horsham Area Primary Schools Girls Football League tonight on the Tanbridge astroturf.

Southwater A retained their top spot but although perennial rivals Heron Way A for once look like they’re not going to be in the title mix, they still managed to put a fly in the Southwater ointment by holding them to a goalless draw and deprive them of two points that keeps their chief rivals, Steyning A and Kingslea A, poised to spring next week if there are any more slip ups.

Highest quality match of the night came in the last round of games when the only remaining unbeaten teams, Southwater A and Steyning A, locked horns. After an evenly matched first half Southwater took the initiative in the second and was rewarded with two goals to inflict Steyning’s first defeat. Southwater A’s attack is undoubtedly impressive but even more so is their defending; they still haven’t conceded.

Kingslea A had a great night to keep themselves in the hunt, securing four straight wins and keeping four clean sheets. Kingslea A’s final game next week will be against Southwater A. Sparks are expected to fly.

Heron Way A gained ground, two places up to fourth as a result of winning three from four and holding the leaders to a draw as part of their second night’s good work. Mixed results for Steyning B and Southwater B saw them drop a place each as a consequence of Heron Way A’s jump.

Heron Way B started well with a win over Northolmes but subsequently levelled out with two defeats and a draw to maintain their mid-table status. Shelley started well by beating the unpredictable Leechpool A 2-1 before Steyning A brought them down to earth with a 4-0 pummelling. Another win, over Heron Way B, plus two defeats saw them finish level on points with that same team, albeit goal difference putting them just below in the placings.

Leechpool B were the big risers in the bottom half of the table, three wins out of four elevating them two places. They even managed to confound alphabetical logic by beating their own A team 1-0 in their last match and lie just one point behind their first team in the table. Playground banter will inevitably ensue on Monday.

Castlewood also sit on 23 points with Leechpool B after managing their first win by beating Pulborough 2-0 and reinforcing their reputation as draw specialists by bagging another two of those.

In the lower reaches Kingslea B and Northolmes fought a goalless draw, not surprisingly as neither was able to score a goal on the night in any of their matches. They sit together on 15 points but the Kings sit the higher of the two courtesy of goal difference.

Another tough night for St Mary’s Pulborough losing all their matches but playing with high spirit and determination in them all nonetheless.
