Southwater Junior Academy hosted the inaugural year 3+4 girls football competition this afternoon and their A team made home advantage count winning all their games to take the title in fine style.

Six teams from four schools entered and played out the simple round-robin format over two hard-baked grass pitches. Despite a high bouncing ball the girls coped admirably to provide some high quality and entertaining matches.

Southwater A and Heron Way quickly emerged as title favourites, as they so often do. The critical match between the two came in the fourth round of matches and it didn’t disappoint when it arrived. Both teams had close near misses before Southwater’s centre forward rolled her marker and slotted across the ‘keeper to take the match in the last five seconds of the game. 

From that point on Southwater despatched the dangerous Leechpool A team 2-0 and then finished with a 9-0 procession versus Castlewood to complete their full house of wins.

Heron Way took second place with their three wins and a draw, one point in front of a Leechpool A team that played well – especially in drawing with Heron Way – but was left to rue a number of missed chances in their first match against Castlewood which finished goallless. 

Castlewood in winning two matches were also rightly please wwith their afternoon’s work and fittingly the bottom two, the Leechpool and Southwater B teams, ended up duelling in the final game of the day to avoid finishing bottom. Both teams scored their first goals of the event but a late goal from the Leechies saw them elevated to fifth spot.

Great fun and this experience will definitely benefit these young girls as they seek to progress their football careers in seasons to come.
