This year’s primary schools netball league came to a close today with the last meeting of Division B. Well done to Southwater B for coming through convincingly as champions but aside from a one-sided final which they won against Nuthurst C all other matches on the night were closely fought reflecting the well balanced and at times fascinating nature of the division in the second phase.

In the first round of games on the night Southwater B confirmed their top spot in the table but lowly Kingslea B made them work for it in a match that finished up 5-3. On the other court St Mary’s beat fellow strugglers Shelley B for their second win overall. Shelley B then did the Saints a favour by beating Kingslea B 3-2 to squeeze up the bottom three and allowing them to progress to the fifth place play-off by virtue of more goals scored, goal difference between them and Kingslea B being level.

Nuthurst D upset the form book by taking down Kingslea A 2-1, opening the door for their C team to book a play-off final spot with a 3-2 defeat of Leechpool C.

So to the play-offs. On a night of small margins Southwater’s 6-0 demolition of Nuthurst C was the only cut and dry match. Leechpool C took third by nudging past Kingslea A 2-1. Fifth was shared by Nuthurst D and Kingslea B by dint of their one-all draw and St Mary’s replicated their earlier 3-1 victory over Shelley B to secure seventh.

What a great process this year’s netball league has been. 18 successfully held  meetings without the need for a single cancellation! Thanks go to all involved but special mention for event leader Nat Jagota supported by her team of young umpires – Orla, Savanna, Olivia, Ella, Rachel and Annabelle – for all doing such a brilliant job of supervising one of the local primary schools’ flagship competition processes.
