Heron Way Win Year 5 Football Cup
More football fun on the Tanbridge astroturf tonight and yet another Heron Way success to report as their year 5’s beat Arunside 1-0 in the final of the Year 5 Open Cup.
With an awkward number entry of 13 teams the first phase matches were split over three round-robin groups of three teams and one of four based on a knockout format.
Southwater A negotiated the four team group well with an eight goal demolition of Leechpool B before seeing off Shelley, who beat Slinfold with the only footgolf decider of the night, with a single goal.
Heron Way A powered their way through Pulborough and St Robert Southwell to win Group B. Leechpool A also got maximum points in Group C with 2-0 wins over both Heron Way B and Castlewood. Group D was the most hotly contested section with strong Kingslea and Arunside teams both beating Southwater B to set up an exciting climax between the two, which the Arunsiders excitingly shaded 2-1.
In the second phase Slinfold made up for the disappointment of their footgolf-based defeat to complete a straight run of victories that saw them come top of the lower tier and ninth overall. Kingslea showed their quality with two single goal wins to come out top of the middle tier and take fifth overall.
The top group semi-finals provided a sharp contrast as Heron Way A won a tight encounter with a single goal over Southwater A whilst Arunside comprehensively ended Leechpool A’s hopes 4-0. Southwater won the third place play-off before another Heron Way single strike saw them through an excellent final against a talented Arunside outfit.
So another great advert for local junior football. Well done also to young refs – Tom S, Tom M, Izzy and Araya – who with an average age of 15 between them did an excellent job of marshalling the proceedings.
