Leechies Hassle Castle to Win Year 3/4 Dodgeball

Leechpool A won the Year 3/4 Horsham Area Dodgeball Tournament tonight, coming out on top of a double round-robin of fixtures involving five teams from four schools at The Bridge leisure centre.

The weather was cold but generally kind to provide good footing on the rubberised surface of one of the centre’s outdoor multicourts. The teams responded well to the conditions putting on a show of excellent dodgeball.

Leechpool A started strongly with a 4-0 walloping of St Robert Southwell and things continued to go well for the Roffey-based kids until they met the much stiffer resistance of Castlewood who held them to 2-2. Unfortunately for the capable Castles they’d tripped up in their previous game to St Robert Southwell, 2-1, and as a result were in a position of playing catch-up from then on.

As the competition progressed into its second phase of games Leechpool A looked even stronger as they racked up big set scores against allcomers without conceding themselves. Castlewood were never quite as dominant but kept on the leaders’ tails nonetheless with narrower victories, notably 2-1 vengeance in the reverse fixture with St Robert Southwell. So as Leechpool A fittingly met Castlewood in the last round of matches a victory for the latter could still see them snatch glory.

And what a game this encounter proved to be. The first set took over 5 minutes and could have gone either way but, shock horror, Castlewood eventually took it. With less than a minute left on the clock the Leechies levelled and in the remaining 45 seconds they managed to keep more players on pitch by the final whistle to take the victory which saw them home to the title.

St Robert Southwell took third. Whilst Leechpool A had their number true and proper they enjoyed very tight matches against all the other teams and won three of them. Arunside took fourth but the way they celebrated their first set score against Leechpool B you’d have thought they’d won the whole event. Well done too to fifth placed Leechpool B for being consistently competitive and securing a much cherished win late on against Arunside.
