B Teams Lead the Way

Heron Way and Leechpool B teams top divisions A and B respectively at the halfway point of the Horsham District Primary Schools Girls Football League, after yesterday’s first meeting proper at the Tanbridge astroturf.

A non-conceding Heron Way B defence, in which Georgina S was superb, was integral to their success. The benefitted from one of a number of default wins resulting from the withdrawal of Steyning’s teams and in the three they did play two scoreless draws and a 1-0 win versus St Mary’s Pulborough elevated them to their lofty heights.

Southwater A and Heron Way A are both in close pursuit however, both carrying a game in hand on the unlikely leaders. Southwater A showed their counterparts how to deal with sibling rivalry, beating their B team 3-0 whilst the Herons fought a scoreless battle of attrition versus their second team. In other matches Southwater A shaded it against Kingslea A and beat neighbours Castlewood 5-0 with Evie P hitting a hat-trick. Annabelle T and Ruby W were excellent in the Southwater midfield. For their part Heron Way A beat Castlewood and St Mary’s Pulborough convincingly in their other two matches. Camille P was their star player.

Southwater B also did well to beat Pulborough and hold Heron Way B to lie in third spot. Erin H and Iris H performed strongly in their ranks. Kingslea A only managed a draw on the night against Castlewood but their default win helped them to a mid-table finish. Lamees L impressed in goal for the Ks.

Pulborough suffered narrow reverses against three of the leading contenders and took out their frustration on Kingslea A with a 3-0 win. Castlewood also had a tough night but a draw against Kingslea A did provide some consolation.

Leechpool B’s high-riding exploits in the lower tier were slightly tempered by a last match, single goal defeat against Southwater C. Up until that point Issy H’s goals plus Thea B’s defensive qualities had secured two wins to add to their default one. Big Brother, Leechpool A, loom large in second place though with maximum points and a game in hand inspired by Violet W’s goals and Neve C’s hard work.

Lying third on 14 points come Southwater C. They will still harbour title hopes next time out despite the 6-0 thumping Leechpool A gave them. They will prefer to focus on the positives of wins against Kingslea and Leechpool B sides in addition to a draw with Rusper. Chloe P, Maisy G and Millie C were the three Supremes giving harmony to the Southie pack.

Rusper looked good in their matches. Maddie showed confidence in attack and took her two chances well against Northolmes. Brooke F played well in goal for the villagers.

Northolmes and St John’s Horsham both finished on seven points but arrived there by different routes. Northolmes, driven on by Isabelle W’s forward running and Anne G’s defensive commitment, scored in all three of their matches to gain bonus points in two of them and a draw versus Kingslea B in the third. St John’s also received a Leechpool A hammering but ran Leechpool B close but got five points from their default over Steyning B.

Phoebe Heap’s effort and improvement provided a great example to her Kingslea B teammates on a night where their best result was the 1-1 draw versus Northolmes.
