A new Active Recovery Hub has been launched to provide schools, local authorities and families with easy access to more than 250 fun, free, inclusive activity resources to help young people boost their health and wellbeing by being active before, during and after the school day.

The hub, developed in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust, will also be a useful tool to help with the planning of summer schools and holiday activity programme delivery.

ukactive Kids has launched a nationwide campaign to recognise unsung primary school staff who have inspired physical activity among school children during a challenging year.

The Active School Hero Award is now open for nominations and will see finalists nominated from across all nine English regions, ahead of an overall winner to be announced at a special ceremony in July 2021.

Funetics Sports Day

Sports day is one of the most exciting days of the year for most schools and pupils. The funetics sports day is England Athletics’ response to help further support and enhance the good practices already in place in your school.

Ahead of this summer’s Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games, the British Red Cross and Team GB have launched a Be Your Best campaign to raise vital funds for people in crisis.

Working alongside the nation’s Olympians to inspire people to be their best, they want schools to take part, and pledge to be their best – by running a quicker 5km, clocking up kind acts in the classroom, baking a record number of cakes or anything in between!

£18m of new funding has been announced for cycle training across the country to ensure children and their families have the confidence to choose active travel.

The funding will go toward delivering high-quality, practical training that goes beyond the playground, teaching children to cycle safely on modern roads. For families looking to improve their confidence cycling together, local authorities can also offer bespoke Bikeability family training sessions to help them feel confident in a range of scenarios.

Sustrans’ Bike to School Week is a week-long event across the UK to encourage families to cycle and scoot to school.

It’s a great way to celebrate the huge benefits an active school run brings, such as the positive impact it has on children’s health and wellbeing, as well as the environment.

Boccia England has launched its Visually Impaired Boccia Development Package.

Organisations, schools, clubs or groups looking to develop and deliver VI boccia can apply to receive this for free.

The Brownlee Foundation have launched a new medal challenge, designed to re-engage and motivate children to get active.

The medal challenge will take place during Summer Term 2 and the aim is for children to make a positive change with regard to their activity, with the emphasis on having fun and achieving your personal best.

The new Change 4 Life Active School Day resources are a great way to kick-start physical activity throughout your school, inspiring pupils to get active with moves they can practice in the playground or at home, and introducing sports and activities they might enjoy.

All Stars and Dynamos Junior Cricket

Registration for the ECB’s junior cricket programmes are now live. These offer a great opportunity to promote cricket to pupils at your school and to form school-club links to your local cricket club.

All Stars (5-8 year olds)

Individuals signing up to the programme will also receive a selection of equipment and clothing delivered directly to their door.

Fitz is a new physical activity programme for primary schools. Its aim is to promote physical activity in children and their families outside the school environment.

It is delivered through a 20 week programme that encourages children and families to gently increase their levels of activity, leading to them establishing healthy habits. Visit the Fitz website to find out more and contact the Fitz team to see how they can work with your school.

A new Girls’ Football in Schools website has been launched. The website has been set up for any school in England to access free resources and teacher CPD. 

Schools can now also make school bookings to take pupils to see the UEFA Women’s Euros 2022.

The charity Stormbreak is delivering a free webinar exclusively to Sussex schools to share how schools can develop pupil mental health through being active.

The webinar will discuss how schools can get involved with their programme and how physical activity can link with the new RSHE curriculum. Please share the link below with SLT, RSHE and mental health leads at your school.

Get your sports day off to a ‘safe start’ by getting Sun Protection Accredited to the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code; a free resource, offering a downloadable toolkit to keep sun protection effective and easy to implement.
 
By getting Key Stage 2 children to take the Sun-Sorted! quiz they will discover why protecting skin is so important. The Melanoma Fund is also offering 150 FREE Sun-Sorted! kits containing up to 30 x bottles of SunSense Kids SPF50, whistles and Sun-Sorted! wristbands on a first come, first served basis.

The Premier League Primary Stars PE Planning Toolkit is a complete package of teaching and learning materials, designed to increase primary school teachers’ confidence in planning PE lessons and helping them to deliver a more inclusive, engaging and high-quality experience for their pupils.

Grants for schools are now available from the South Downs National Park to support virtual visits, in-school visits and school trips and transport.

The grants are designed to connect pupils and staff with the special qualities of the National Park;
help pupils enjoy outdoor, nature-based and real-world learning experiences and support curriculum-linked and health and wellbeing outcomes for pupils.

 

Affiliations to the Sussex Schools FA are now open for schools looking to attend SSFA competitions or nominate players for county trials.

Representative team trials will take place this month. Players can be nominated via the SSFA website.

Regional primary competitions will start this term culminating in a Sussex Final Day at Culver Road on Tuesday 11 January. These competitions are 7-a-side U11 for mixed teams, girls teams and small schools.

Sussex School Games Sports Day Festival Pack

Sussex School Games Organisers, along with Active Sussex and the Sussex School Games County Alliance, are pleased to launch a brand new ‘Sussex School Games Sports Day Festival’ pack.

The inclusive and flexible festival format, themed around the School Games values, is designed to help schools run a fun and safe sports day festival, whilst engaging children in their 60 active minutes.

The free resource will help schools reflect on their current club offer and support them to create physical activity clubs or sessions that specifically target the needs of different children.

Looking for fun ways to keep your class moving at the end of term?

Inspired by characters from Frozen, Toy Story and The Avengers, these exciting 10 Minute Shake Up activities can be used at any point in the school day to encourage pupils to get the recommended level of daily physical activity (at least 60 minutes). They can also help you deliver the new Relationships Education and Health Education curriculum.

LTA Youth Schools

The Lawn Tennis Association’s new Youth Schools programme provides access to free online teacher training and resources for primary schools.

Teachers who complete the course will also receive a resource pack and a £250 voucher to spend on equipment, or ten hours of team teaching support from an LTA Accredited Coach.

In the new Sport England strategy, ‘physical literacy’ is mentioned several times within the positive experiences for the children and young people a big issue. But do you know what physical literacy really means and how you can embed it at your school?

The International Physical Literacy Association has now made its foundation course in physical literacy free for anyone to access and would be a great place to start for those wanting to learn more.

Level 6 Award in Primary School Physical Education Subject Leadership

Developed by the Association for Physical Education (afPE) and Sports Leaders UK (SLUK), this is a recognised qualification to improve the overall leadership and management of the delivery of the physical education curriculum within primary schools. The qualification aims to:

  • enable subject leaders to support and upskill other colleagues in teaching the physical education curriculum. 
  • allow delegates to advocate, articulate and lead physical education to achieve whole school improvement.

 

Prerequisites: Delegates must have QTS and have previously completed the Level 5 certificate

Dates: 

  • Day one – Wednesday 7 July 2021 (9am – 3pm)
  • Day two – Wednesday 20 October 2021 (9am – 3pm)
  • Presentations – Wednesday 26 January 2022 (3:30pm – 4:30pm)
